If you are a film lover, you probably take your movie-going experience very seriously. You research which premium format to see the latest film in and often can’t decide which one to choose because there are so many. IMAX, Dolby Cinema, RPX, XD, etc.. There are a plethora of options but one format you might not have come across is Ultra AVX. In simple terms, an Ultra AVX movie theater is a high-tech cinema experience that offers superior image and sound quality compared to regular movie theaters. In this blog post I will explain what an AVX theater is as well as how it compares to other popular cinema formats like IMAX.

AVX: Audio Visual Experience

AVX stands for “Audio Visual Experience,” and their premium format takes it to the next level. They offer larger screens, better image quality, and immersive sound that makes you feel like you’re right in the middle of the action. The technology used in Ultra AVX movie theaters is designed to deliver a fantastic cinematic experience that truly brings movies to life. Gigantic blockbuster films with incredible cinematography and sound design like Dune, Dunkirk, Mad Max Fury Road, and others are greatly amplified by being seen in a premium large format like AVX. Currently, The UltraAVX format is exclusive to the cinema chain Cineplex, which is located in Canada.

Key Features of Ultra AVX: Larger than life Screens

One of the key features of Ultra AVX theaters is the screen size. Typically, the screens in Ultra AVX theaters are much larger than in regular standard auditoriums, this enhanced screen size provides a more immersive experience for the audience. The screens are also designed to be curved, allowing the image to fully encapsulate the audience in the visual spectacle of what is transpiring on screen.

Higher resolution

It has been said that AVX theaters use the Christie CP2230 which can display images with a resolution of 4096 x 2160 and a brightness output of 33,000 lumens. However, it is likely that they have changed projectors as that was reported in 2012.

Dolby Atmos available at select locations

The sound system in an Ultra AVX theater is also a major upgrade over a standard auditorium. These theaters feature high-quality surround sound that delivers crisp, clear sounds with deep bass. AVX features the highest quality sound system in the theatrical landscape, Dolby Atmos. However, according to Cineplex, there is only a few select locations that are equipped with Dolby atmos.

Superior Amenities

Another important aspect of Ultra AVX theaters is the seating. These theaters typically have large, comfortable seats that recline and offer plenty of legroom. The seats are designed to be ergonomic, allowing you to sit for long periods without feeling uncomfortable.

Ultra AVX theaters also offer a range of amenities that make your movie experience more enjoyable. Many of these theaters have a lounge area where you can grab a drink or a snack before the movie starts. Some theaters even offer in-seat dining, allowing you to order food and drinks that will be delivered to your seat during the movie.

How does AVX differ from IMAX?

While both Ultra AVX and IMAX theaters aim to provide an enhanced movie-watching experience, there are some key differences between them.

Exclusive aspect ratio

The main difference between Ultra AVX and IMAX is that IMAX theaters have their own exclusive aspect ratio in which they can show movies. For example, films that are shot with IMAX cameras or IMAX certified Cameras can display films in either a 1.43:1 or 1.90:1 aspect ratio, meanwhile, most of the other films can only be displayed in 1.85:1 or 2.39:1. The exclusive aspect ratio that IMAX provides allows films to show up to 26% more picture than normal theaters. However, very few films are released in IMAX’s exclusive aspect ratio, only a handful are per year.

Quality Control

Another difference is the size of the screen. IMAX has some of the largest theaters in the world, although the size varies by location, in a lot of instances an AVX theater can have a bigger screen than an IMAX theater. IMAX has been known to have quality control issues as the experience you get at their theaters can vary dramatically. This is especially true when it comes to screen size as IMAX theaters can sometimes even have smaller screens than standard auditoriums. If you want a standardized screen size without major fluctuations Ultra AVX is the better choice.
