Lucy 2: Will there be a sequel?

Ever since the film Lucy grossed over 460 million worldwide at the box office there have been talks that a potential sequel could be in development.

The initial talks for Lucy 2 started after the films release in 2014 but for the past 8 years they have largely stalled.

There was an announcement at CineEurope that a sequel was in development and that there was a finished script for the project but these announcements weren’t entirely the truth.

Why has lucy 2 not started production

There are numerous reasons why Lucy 2 has not started production or been given a release date.

The reasons include not being able to bring back the cast from the original Lucy (2014), a lack of desire to do a sequel from the director, and the difficulty in continuing the story given the ending of the first movie.

Bringing back the cast from Lucy (2014)

One of the biggest reasons there has not been any developments with Lucy 2 is that Scarlett Johansson hasn’t shown any interest in coming back to do a sequel.

This happens alot and is a big reason why it is hard to make sequels.

Scarlett has been busy with many projects most notable being her roles in MCU projects as the character black widow.

The movie was a smash hit at the box office largely due to her and her star power so it wouldn’t make sense to make a sequel if she is not committed to returning.

Lack of desire from the director

Director Luc Besson has not shown any interest in doing Lucy 2.

In regards to a sequel to Lucy he said the following, “I don’t see how we can do one. It’s not made for that. If I find something good enough, maybe I will, but for now I don’t even think about it”.

This is a big reason production or a possible release date for Lucy 2 have not been announced.

Doing a sequel without Luc Besson or Scarlett Johansson could potentially make for a major flop at the box office.

The ending of the original causes problems for lucy 2

Scarlett Johansson’s character seemed to have a finished character arch by the end of the film so continuing that characters story would seem kind of odd.

It’s difficult to imagine a scenario in which they can bring back Johansson’s character with it making sense and staying true to the overall theme of the original film.

However, there’s obviously plenty of demand for the sequel, Lucy has made over 34 million just in DVD and Blu Ray sales which is very impressive.

It even had a 4k Blu-Ray (paid link)released for the film which is a format typically preserved for big-budget blockbusters and classic movies from the past.
