Blade runner 2049: Is it a remake, reboot, or Sequel?
Blade Runner 2049 is the sequel to the acclaimed 1982 film Blade Runner. The sequel was released 35 years after the original Blade Runner making many wonder if the film was a direct sequel or a reboot. Films rarely get sequels after so many years but 2049’s long 35 year gap isn’t entirely unheard of. Also adding to the speculation was that Ridley Scott did not direct 2049, instead opting to be a executive producer on the film, Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Sicario, Dune) directed the movie. 2049 is most obviously a sequel because many of the same characters in the original are either in the movie or mentioned. However, although it is a sequel 2049 can absolutely be it’s own standalone film and you don’t necessarily have to watch the original to understand or enjoy Villeneuve’s version.
In what order should you watch the blade runner films?
It’s really up to you. Many think 2049 is a superior film to the original so there isn’t a hardline stance on watching the films in order. The sequel is much more technologically advanced with world-class VFX and cinematography. In fact many people have said that Blade Runner 2049 had some of the best visual effects of the past decade.
