Was tomb raider a flop?

Tomb Raider falls into the grey area when it comes to box office profitability. The film had a budget of 90-106 million and grossed 275 million globally. The film was considered a disappointment in North America as it only grossed 58 million. Although the film grossed more than 2.5x its production budget It is likely that the film lost money in it’s initial theatrical run. This was because Tomb Raider relied heavily on ticket sales in China which is notorious for taking 75% of ticket sales from studios.

How much money did tomb raider make (2018)- China

Tomb Raider made 79 of its 275 million in China which is a staggering number. Typically films that rely that much on China will need anywhere from 2.7-3x their production budget just to break even after marketing expenses and giving 50-60% (75% in China) of the ticket sales to movie theaters. Given this information the break even point for Tomb Raider was likely anywhere from 270-318 million. A more accurate guess would be that it was about 275 million if the budget was on the low end (90 million).

Non theatrical revenue: Blu-Ray/DVD sales

Tomb Raider 2018 has not done well when it comes to home entertainment. The film has only grossed around 14 million in domestic Blu-ray/DVD sales which is quite bad but not surprising considering it bombed in North America.

Comparison to Lara croft tomb raider’s box office

The first installment of the Tomb Raider franchise came in 2001 with Angelina Jolie starring in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. The movie went on to gross the same as Tomb Raider 2018, coming in at around 275 million worldwide. The difference between the two films is that Lara Croft: Tomb Raider had a strong domestic outing as it grossed 131 million in North America, almost triple the gross over the 2018 film. If you account for inflation Tomb Raider 2018 made significantly less than the 2001 version of Tomb Raider.

Why wasn’t tomb raider 2018 a success

The main reason Tomb Raider was not a financial success is because of it’s poor reviews as well as the history of lackluster results from video game movies. Remarkably enough Tomb Raider is one of the top 15 highest grossing video game films of all time but that still was not enough to save it.

Will there be another tomb raider movie?

There was general optimism that another Tomb Raider film would be released but as of right now the IP seems to be in peril. MGM recently lost the rights to the franchise and star Alicia Vikander is not attached to the project anymore. The reason for MGM losing the rights was mainly due to them not greenlighting a sequel quick enough.
