RRR: Hit or Flop?

It is unclear how much RRR grossed at the box office but it seems it was anywhere from 100150 million dollars. It is also unclear if the film was a hit or flop but it is likely that the film at least broke even as it was made on a budget of 72 million dollars. Generally speaking large blockbuster films need 2.5x their production budget to break even at the box office of which RRR came up short. The reason for the 2.5x rule is to account for shared box office sales with theaters and marketing expenses by the studio. Although RRR likely broke even after sharing ticket sales it could of lost money if the marketing budget was on the higher end. It is unclear how large the marketing budget was for RRR. It is also unclear how much Indian cinemas take as a percentage of box office earnings. Regardless the film has become a global phenomenon and it is one of the highest grossing Indian films of all time.

RRR Budget

RRR had a gigantic budget for a Tollywood film with 72 million US dollars so it was always going to be a uphill battle to achieve profitability. The reason for RRR costing 72 million to make is likely due to delays in production caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

International/Domestic Box Office Earnings

RRR grossed the vast majority of it’s box office earnings in India and the United States. The film had limited reach in other markets across the globe as India and the US accounted for about 90% of the movies revenue.

Will there be a RRR 2?

According to RRR director S.S. Rajamouli there will be a RRR 2. Even though the film wasn’t a smash hit at the box office it seems there is optimism for a sequel due to it’s success on Netflix. RRR was the first non English film ever to trend on Netflix for 10 consecutive weeks.
